Moot Court

Moot Court is generally a form of pleading, where pleaders are law students plead before a hypothetical court on a hypothetical/fictional case involving different statutes, including the Constitution, and topics, including International Law. It is an extracurricular activity conducted in most of the law colleges around the globe, in which many law students take part to enhance their legal research, drafting, and oral advocacy skills. We at Siddhartha also organise Intra as well as the National Moot Court Competition.

Gist of Previous NMCC, 2024

The previous moot proposition explored the constitutional validity of criminal defamation under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, juxtaposed against the right to free speech under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. It highlighted a political controversy involving public figures, raising questions about the balance between protecting individual reputations and ensuring democratic accountability. The case debated whether defamation should have remained a criminal offense or been confined to civil remedies, emphasizing the tension between individual rights and societal harmony. The matter invited a constitutional bench to assess the compatibility of these laws with Articles 19 and 21.
